Zidane is about to join PSG as a coach — report

French champions Paris Saint-Germain are close to reaching an agreement for Zinedine Zidane to replace Mauricio Pochettino as coach, French media reported on Friday.

According to Europe 1 radio, an agreement in principle has been reached between the club and 49-year-old coach Zidane for the former Real Madrid manager to join before the new season.

Contacted by AFP, a PSG source declined to confirm or deny the reports.

Pochettino has a year left on his contract and led the Qatar-backed side to the Ligue 1 title last term but they have eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid in the round of 16.

The owners of the Qatari club are hungry to win the top league of European club football and Zidane has led the Spanish giants to the trophy for three consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2018.

A World Cup winner with France in 1998, Zidane won the Champions League as a Real Madrid player in 2002.

As a coach, he managed Madrid twice, winning a Champions League hat-trick in his first attempt as well as a La Liga title, two Club World Cups, two Super Cups. UEFA and a Spanish Super Cup.

He left Real in 2018 but was reappointed in March 2019 and won another La Liga title in 2020 before that. depart again next year.

Zidane was in Paris at the same time as the Emir of Qatar for last month’s Champions League final at the Stade de France, against Real against Liverpool.

Earlier, PSG announced that Luis Campos was their football adviser to replace the departed Leonardo.

The new French top-flight season kicks off the weekend of August 6 and 7.

A week earlier, champions PSG will play French Cup winners Nantes in the Trophee des Champions, the traditional closing game of the French season, in Tel-Aviv, Israel.
