MADRID – Brazilian full-back Marcelo cried on Monday as he said goodbye to Real Madrid but said he had never thought about retiring and was motivated to continue playing for many more years.

“I don’t think much about the future, I like to live in the present. But it’s really hard to leave the club you’ve played for all your life,” Marcelo said at a press conference.

“I am not afraid of the future. I’ve done what I wanted here and I’m looking forward to what’s next. Not out of fear of uncertainty, but with excitement. ”

Marcelo says he is still undecided about his future but has ruled out retiring or returning to his native Brazil, hinting that he wants to continue playing in Europe and at a club that will play in the Champions League. League next season.

The 34-year-old has made 546 appearances for the club since joining in 2007 and has become the best player in Real’s 120-year history.

His departure comes after winning his fifth Champions League title as captain, his 25th title with the club as they beat Liverpool 1-0 in the final in Paris on Sunday. last month.

“I walk out of here with my head held high. My family is very proud of me,” said Marcelo tearfully at the ceremony organized by the club, attended by family, close friends, teammates and coach Carlo Ancelotti.

“I feel very fortunate, everything I have in life is thanks to my work, but I have been lucky with the people I have always been by my side. Sincere thanks to all of you.

“This is not a goodbye; I don’t feel that I’m leaving Real Madrid. The future of the club is guaranteed with promising young talents, and in that I include my son, who is playing well in the academy. I came as a child, and I left as a man”.

Despite being a key player for most of his career, Marcelo has found game time limited in recent seasons and made just 12 league appearances in the 2021-22 season. It’s a role he’s admittedly uncomfortable with, but he’s fulfilled it in his stride.

“I argued with Ancelotti and (Zinedine) Zidane last season because I wanted to play more, but as this year progressed I learned that you can be useful in other ways off the pitch. As a leader in the dressing room, I learn to appreciate what my teammates are doing,” he said.
