Serie A attracts spectators from around the world, but the way fans can watch matches is changing, as Italy’s top soccer league joins the Metaverse.

League leaders AC Milan clash with Fiorentina on Sunday at the famous San Siro stadium which will be the first football match to be broadcast, where fans in Africa and the Middle East can watch from the “room” Serie A in the Nemesis supermarket”.

Metaverse is a broad term. It usually refers to a shared virtual world environment that is accessible to everyone through the internet. The term can refer to a digital space made more lifelike using virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR).

In the match against Milan, where the leaders continue their quest to win the first Serie A championship since 2011, the user will be able to interact with the various features contained in the in-game room.

“We have chosen to be the first to broadcast a football match on Metaverse because we believe that the frontiers of technological innovation are extremely important for a modern league like Serie A,” said Director Serie A executive Luigi De Siervo said.

“The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) represents a strategic region for us due to the overwhelming presence of Generation Z and its specific receptivity to new developments.”

The federation emphasized that this is just the beginning of a partnership with blockchain technology company ConsenSys and video game platform The Nemesis, as they enter the rapidly changing digital world.
