MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines hit a big blow in their bid to qualify for a second time at the AFC Asian Cup on Tuesday.
With their chances of qualifying for next year’s continental meeting at stake, the Philippines Azkals suffered a 4-0 defeat to Palestine in Group B at the MFF Stadium in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The Azkals conceded two goals in the first half as Saleh Chihadeh and Tamer Seyam came on for Palestine in the 31st and 42nd minutes, respectively.
Mohammed Yameen quickly added to the Azkals’ woes with a header in the 55th minute before Mahmoud Abu Warda sent the game out of reach in the 72nd minute.
The victory sent Palestine, who topped the group with a 2-0 scoreline, to their third Asian Cup in a row.
The Azkals are going out in a thrilling way 1-0 victory over Mongolia courtesy of Gerrit Holtman on Saturday but failed to give them momentum against Palestine.
With the loss, the Azkals are stuck on four points following a goalless draw against Yemen in their third round opener on Wednesday.
